True to tradition, members of the Davis High School Jazz Choir hosted more than 80 elementary school students at its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day choral workshop at the DSHS Brunelle Performing Arts Building on Monday, Jan. 15, 2024.
The Jazz Choir workshop celebrated the spirit of Dr. King, who once remarked, “Much of the power of our Freedom Movement in the United States has come from (jazz). It has strengthened us with its sweet rhythms when courage began to fail. It has calmed us with its rich harmonies when spirits were down.”
Students in kindergarten through sixth grade flocked to the event, some eager and bursting with enthusiasm, some shy and timid. Over the four-hour workshop, though, the Jazz Choir students’ contagious passion for music spread throughout the group and participating elementary school students were observed hugging, laughing, learning songs and dances, working together, trying something new.
